Birthday Cake for Cats
I've made many birthday cakes for both my cat and my dog. Creating a dog-friendly cake isn’t too hard because you can use lots of regular cake ingredients, just leaving out anything unsafe for dogs. When it comes to cats, being obligate carnivores and all, it’s always been tricky to make a meat-based cake that actually feels like cake.
Fortunately, I think I’ve mastered it! This recipe not only uses obligate carnivore-friendly ingredients, keeping it healthy, but also bakes up fluffy, beautifully, and is super simple to make.
Ingredients
One 3 oz Jar of Meat Baby Food (any flavor your cat likes)
One 3.2 oz Can of Wet Cat Food (pate works best)
1 Tablespoon Pumpkin Puree
3 Tablespoons Flour
1/8th Teaspoon of Baking Soda
1 Large Egg
Spray Coconut Oil
Icing & Decoration
1/2 Cup Magifrost Dog Icing (available on Amazon)
2 Liquid Cat Treats (I used Tiki Cat Stix)
Optional
Rose Petals
Pet Sprinkles (Mine are from Mittens Variety)
Candles
Instructions
Mix Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the baby food, wet cat food, pumpkin puree, egg yolk, flour, and baking soda. Stir until smooth.
Whip Egg White: Use a milk frother (or whisk) to whip the egg white separately. This step is optional, but will make your cake lighter and fluffier. Skipping this step will result in a denser texture.
Fold in Egg White: Once your egg whites are fluffy, gently fold them into the rest of the ingredients we've already mixed.
Grease Your Ramekins: I decided to go with a spray coconut oil as it’s non-toxic for cats, has healthy fats and a lot of cats enjoy the flavor
5. Bake: bake at 350° for 20 to 23 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
6. Cool Completely: Let the cake cool fully before icing. For best results, place the layers in the refrigerator to chill while you prepare the icing.
8. Ice & Decorate: After you’ve allowed the layers to cool, assemble your cake and decorate with cat friendly ingredients.
Icing The Cake
When it comes to icing the cake, I chose to keep things super simple by purchasing a pre-mixed pet icing on Amazon, however you can easily make the icing I used at home by combining 1 cup tapioca starch (tapioca flour) and 1 tablespoon cornstarch and mixing with 1-2 liquid cat treats.
Whether you are using the mix, or making a homemade icing, I highly recommend adding in the liquid cat treats a little bit at a time so you can reach the proper consistency. The instructions on the pre-made icing asked for 1 tablespoon of water, and I ended up using 2 tubes for a drizzle-able consistency.
Liquid Cat Treats
Decorations
I used pet-safe sprinkles from Mittens Variety and rose petals to decorate my cats cake, but any edible, pet-safe flower petals would be great and of course you can use anything you want just double-check everything is pet-safe!
This I think it's technically meant to harden overtime, however because we’re using liquid cat treats instead of the recommended amount of water I don't think the icing will ever get completely dry.
Want a Grain-Free Cake Instead?
If you're looking to make this recipe, but need grain-free cake, you can do this pretty easily. Just swap out the flour for coconut flour!
Since coconut flour is much more absorbent than regular flour, you’ll need to use less coconut flour in the recipe. Typically, you would use about 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of coconut flour compared to standard flour.
For this recipe, start with around 1 - 1.5 Tablespoons coconut flour and adjust from there based on the batters texture. You may also need to add a bit more liquid (baby food, wet cat food or water) to ensure the batter isn’t too dry or crumbly.
And there you have it
An easy, biologically appropriate birthday cake for cats that's an actual cake!
If you make this, be sure to tag us on social media because I would love to see how it turns out. Also, let me know if you change anything, or find any tips and tricks of your own.
Recipes like this are super easy to customize and I don't even typically follow a recipe, I mostly eyeball everything until I get a texture that looks like it’ll turn out.
However, everyone always asks me for a recipe when I bake for my pets, so I'll do my best to write everything down and measure my ingredients, so I can share them with you and we can all make healthy pet treats at home!
